Sood took command of the investigating agency on May 25, 2023. Before this, he was holding the charge of DGP of Karnataka.

New CBI Director Praveen Sood has visited 51 branches of the agency across the country within 4 months (108 days) of taking charge. Sood is the first officer to visit so many branches in such a short time. According to the report of news agency PTI, by October 15, he will also visit the remaining 7 branches.

Sood took command of the investigating agency on May 25, 2023. Before this, he was holding the charge of DGP of Karnataka. Sood is a resident of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. He became IPS in 1986, when he was 22 years old.

Started the tour immediately after assuming office
According to the report, Sood started his tours soon after assuming charge. He did this to understand the work of the investigating agency at the ground level and to know about the mental condition of the staff. Whenever he goes to any branch, he definitely talks to the staff there. This gives them an opportunity to know their concerns and thoughts.

The visit helped in formulating policies and bringing administrative reforms
Sood said that these visits have helped him in formulating policies and bringing administrative reforms within the agency during his tenure in the agency. After this, he has also transferred many people to strengthen the agency.

The Center had issued Sood’s appointment letter on May 14.
State DGP Praveen Sood was appointed as the new director of CBI on 14 May 2023, the next day after the results of Karnataka Assembly elections. The Central Government had issued the order for his appointment. Sood will hold this post for two years. He was retiring in May 2024, but with this appointment his tenure has been extended till May 2025.

According to news agency sources, on the evening of May 13, a meeting was held between PM Modi, Chief Justice of India DVE Chandrachud and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary. In this, three IPS officers were selected for the post of CBI Director. PM Modi and CJI DVE Chandrachud had approved the name of Praveen Sood.

Praveen’s father was a government clerk and mother a government teacher.

Praveen Sood’s father Om Prakash Sood was a clerk in the Delhi government, while mother Kamlesh Sood was a teacher in a government school in Delhi. Sood did his schooling from a government school in Delhi. After this he did B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi.

After becoming IPS in 1986, he got Karnataka cadre. While in service, he completed MBA in Public Police Management from IIM Bangalore. In the initial phase of police service, he was SP in Bellary and Raichur. Apart from this, he was also DCP in Bengaluru and Mysuru.

Sood has received gold medal from CM in 1996. Apart from this, Police Medal was given by the President in 2002 and Police Medal for distinguished service in 2011. In June 2020, Praveen Sood was made the DGP of Karnataka.

CBI Director Selection Process
For the selection of CBI director, the name is finalized in the meeting of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. After this, after receiving instructions from the Home Ministry, the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT) issues orders.
