United Nations Expressed Concern Over Manipur Violence  Appealed to provide security to human rights activists;  The house was attacked on 5th October

After the second outbreak of violence in Manipur, the United Nations has expressed concern over the situation in the state. United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHR) wrote on social media on Friday (October 6) – We are concerned about the threats being received by human rights activist Bablu Lithongbam, who spoke on Manipur violence.

On October 5, Bablu Lithongbam’s house was attacked by a violent mob. UNHR blamed Meitai Lipuns and Arambai Tengol as being behind the incident. Also demanded from the authorities to provide security to Bablu Lithongbam, his family and house.

Human rights activist Bablu Lithongbam has been critical of Meitei fundamentalist organizations Meitei Lipuns and Arambai Tengol. Meitei Lipuns had announced to boycott Bablu Lithongbam and Brinda Thounaojam in a press release on 5 October.

However, after the attack, a video of Bablu Lithongbam surfaced on social media, in which he had apologized to the people of Manipur for his statement given in an interview during the initial days of Manipur violence.

Bablu Lithongbam has also been critical of state CM N Biren. He had said that to end the violence in Manipur, BJP should make another BJP leader the CM instead of N Biren Singh.

26 September: There was a clash between security forces and students in Imphal city on 26 September. In this, 54 students including 1 teacher were injured. The students were protesting against the murder of two students missing since July. All the injured have been admitted to the nearest hospital. After this incident, the state government has once again banned mobile internet till October 1.

27 September: At around 11 pm, protesters attacked the house of the Deputy Collector in Imphal West district. Two vehicles parked in the compound of his house were set on fire, while the main gate was broken. A lamp post was uprooted and window glasses were broken. The aim of these protesters was to set fire to the house of the Deputy Collector. Police have found petrol bomb bottles in the compound of the house.

Apart from this, the mob set fire to the BJP office in Thoubal district. Apart from this, the house of BJP President Sharda Devi has also been vandalized in Imphal.

28 September: The miscreants came to attack the private house of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh at Luwangsangbam in Imphal East, but the police stopped them about 500 meters before the house. The police dispersed the miscreants by firing tear gas shells. Security at CM’s house has been increased after the attempted attack.

4th October: The attackers entered Meitei area late night and set two-three houses on fire in Patsoi of Kaithelmangbi in Imphal West. All the attackers were armed with weapons. The miscreants also fired several rounds. The attackers fled after the incident. After this a group of women from Meitei community gathered at the spot. The security forces stopped the women from moving forward and tried to maintain peace. Violence has been going on in Manipur since the murder of two students missing since July came to light.

CBI arrested 4 for murder of 2 students
On October 1, CBI arrested 4 people including 2 women for the murder of the two students. He was caught from Churachandpur. Their names are Paominlun Haokip, S. Malswan are Haokip, Lingneichon Bight and Tinuping. The investigating agency took all the accused to Guwahati in Assam. Guwahati Court sent these accused to CBI custody for 5 days.

The main accused of murder and his wife are also among those arrested. The CBI also took away his two daughters, aged 9 and 11 years. The daughters are minors, that is why they were asked to hand them over to a relative.

The husband of a victim woman said, ‘A mob of a thousand people had attacked the village. I could not save my wife and the villagers from the mob. Even the policemen did not give us security. The mob continued to commit atrocities for three hours. My wife somehow took shelter in a village.

At the same time, the mother of the other woman seen in the video said- ‘Now we will never return to our village. There my little boy was shot dead, my daughter was put to shame. Now everything is over for me.

180 dead, 1100 injured so far in Manipur
So far 180 people have been killed in the caste violence that has been going on in Manipur for the last 4 months. More than 1100 people have been injured. Not only this, 5172 cases of arson were reported, which included incidents of burning and vandalism of 4786 houses and 386 religious places.
