Government employees gathered in Delhi demanding old pension. Crowd of lakhs in Ramlila Maidan, named Pension Shankhnaad Rally

Lakhs of government employees participated in the rally in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan in support of implementing old pension.

Lakhs of government employees gathered at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on Sunday. Their demand is that the old pension should be implemented. Organizations associated with the National Movement for Old Pension Scheme have participated in this rally.

Delhi Police did not allow setting up tents in the grounds. Despite this, a large number of employees came to participate in the rally.

The old pension scheme is applicable in 5 states of the country…

Rajasthan
Rajasthan is the first state to implement Old Age Pension (OPS). While presenting the state budget in 2023-24, CM Ashok Gehlot had announced to abolish the new pension scheme and restore the old pension.

Chhattisgarh
In January this year, after the announcement of the budget, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel gave the employees the option to choose the new and old pension scheme. The Cabinet had decided that employees can go back to OPS after depositing the contribution made by the state for the new pension and the dividend earned on it.

Jharkhand
On September 1, 2022, the Jharkhand Cabinet approved the restoration of the old pension scheme. Hemant Soren government had made an election promise to implement OPS in his state.

Punjab
The Chief Minister of Punjab implemented the old pension scheme in the state in November 2022. Punjab Government had sent a study team to three states (Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand) to bring the Old Pension Scheme.

Himachal Pradesh
Himachal government had issued a notification to implement old pension on May 5. For this, the state government has amended the Central Civil Service Pension Rules 1972.

Old pension scheme closed in 2004, NPS implemented
Under the old pension scheme i.e. Old Pension Scheme (OPS), before 2004, the government used to give a fixed pension to the employees after retirement. This pension was based on the employee’s salary at the time of retirement. Under this scheme, after the death of a retired employee, his family members were also given pension benefits.

However, the government of Alt Bihari Vajpayee had decided to close down the old pension scheme on 1 April 2004. After which, in the year 2004, National Pension Scheme was started in place of the old pension scheme.
