Chandrababu’s food was sent to jail in a car on Tuesday morning. He has been allowed to have home-cooked food inside the jail due to health reasons.
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, arrested in the Rs 371 crore skill development scam, was sent to Rajahmundry jail on Monday for 14 days judicial custody. Meanwhile, the State Crime Investigation Department (CID) has filed a petition in the court seeking 15 days’ custody of Chandrababu. This petition will be heard on Wednesday.
The Vijayawada court on Tuesday rejected the petition of Chandrababu’s legal team in which he was appealed to be released from jail and kept under house arrest. Chandrababu’s lawyers had said that there was a threat to Chandrababu’s safety in jail, however, the court agreed with the arguments of CID and rejected the application.
After this, Chandrababu’s lawyers have filed two petitions in the High Court. In one of these, there is a demand to close the case, while in the other petition, there is a demand for bail. These can be heard on Wednesday.
All 19 TDP MLAs are under house arrest for 72 hours
Meanwhile, the state government has kept all the 19 TDP MLAs under house arrest for 72 hours. Police have been deployed outside the houses of all the party leaders since Saturday morning. Even when Chandrababu was produced in the court after his arrest, the party leaders were not allowed to come out of their homes. By the time the party called a bandh in the state on Monday and workers protested against Chandrababu’s arrest, all 19 MLAs were still under house arrest.
Meanwhile, state Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has returned from his 10-day visit to London. TDP has accused him of getting Chandrababu arrested by implicating him in a false case.
Chandrababu was arrested from Nandyal on 9 September
CID had arrested Chandrababu from Nandyal on 9 September. On Sunday (September 10), he was produced in Vijayawada court. The court sent him to judicial custody for 14 days. In the early hours of Monday, Naidu was taken to Rajahmundry Central Jail in Rajamahendravaram, 200 km from Vijayawada.

TDP workers protest in the state, YSRCP workers burst crackers
Telugu Desam Party had called a bandh in the state to protest against Chandrababu’s arrest. Activists demonstrated at various places. At the same time, workers of the ruling party YSRCP celebrated the arrest of Chandrababu. Firecrackers were burst at many places on Sunday night.
Clashes broke out between TDP workers and police during a protest in West Godavari district on Monday.
What is skill development scam?
- In the year 2016, the then CM Chandrababu Naidu had established Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) to provide skill training to unemployed youth.
- The TDP government signed an MoU with group companies Siemens Industry Software India Ltd and Design Tech Systems Pvt Ltd for the Rs 3,300 crore project of APSSDC.
- Under this agreement, Siemens Industry Software India was to set up six excellence centers for skill development at a cost of Rs 3,300 crore.
- The state government was to pay 10 per cent of the total cost of the project, while the remaining amount was to be given to Siemens and Design Tech as assistance.
CID made many revelations in the investigation
CID found in its investigation that the project did not have approval from the state cabinet. Despite this the project was started without tender. Under the MoU, Siemens Company was to invest in the project on its own behalf. However, the company did not invest anything of its own.
In contrast, Rs 371 crore allocated by the state government was distributed among various shell companies – Allied Computers, Skillers India Private Limited, Knowledge Podium, Cadence Partners and ETA Greens. Fake documents were prepared for this.
CID said in a press release that in the year 2018, the Anti Corruption Bureau had received a complaint about this scam. However, those in power then tried to stop the investigation and removed important documents from the state secretariat. Before the current government’s investigation, the GST Intelligence Wing and the IT Department were also investigating the scam.
Company fired project manager after internal investigation
Siemens Global Corporate Office conducted an internal investigation, which found that the project manager had transferred the project money to shell companies in the form of hawala transactions. Siemens Global had fired the accused manager.
